Stereoscopic daguerreotype portrait of an unidentified middle-aged man seated in a formal studio setting, shown in near-identical paired images intended for viewing through a stereoscope. The subject wears a dark jacket, waistcoat, and cravat, posed with one hand raised thoughtfully to his cheek, a gesture commonly used in early studio portraiture. The image is housed behind a double oval mat, with both plates aligned for stereoscopic depth when viewed properly. The photographic process is daguerreotype, evident in the mirrored surface, fine tonal range, and mid-19th-century presentation.

The images are housed in a full leather push-button stereoscopic case stamped on the interior with “Mascher’s Improved Stereoscope, Patented March 5, 1856,” identifying the specialized viewing format and maker. Mascher stereoscopic cases were designed to allow the images to be viewed directly within the case without a separate viewer, reflecting an early and innovative approach to domestic stereoscopy during the 1850s.

The case features gilt lettering, dual circular viewing apertures, and retains its original construction and format. No photographer’s imprint or identifying text is present on the plates or mats. The subject remains unidentified.
