A young child in a tiered wool cape with ornamental button trim and a fur collar stands at center in this rare stereo daguerreotype pair, each image housed behind an oval gilt mat within a double-aperture brass preserver. The child wears a striped military-style cap with a flat brim, holds a walking stick or cane in one hand, and rests the other on a small table draped in a patterned cloth. Hair falls long to the shoulders beneath the cap, and the child's direct, steady gaze anchors both exposures.

The two daguerreian images are nearly identical, captured in the same session to produce a stereoscopic pair for three-dimensional viewing. The gold-beaded oval mats are set side by side in a single mount with a goldenrod-toned backing board and red velvet liner visible along the case interior.

John F. Mascher of Philadelphia patented his improved stereoscope case on March 8, 1853, integrating viewing lenses directly into the case lid so that the stereo pair could be viewed without a separate device. This example represents one of the earliest purpose-built stereo photographic formats in American photography.

The interior lid is stamped in gold lettering: "MASCHER'S IMPROVED STEREOSCOPE / PHILADELPHIA / PATENT / MARCH 8, 1853." The exterior leather case is black with tooled border detailing and brass side clasps. No photographer's imprint is visible.
