Collectors, here is a meeting of pioneers and personalities. On the outside, Meade Brothers’ scarce “Daguerre” case presents a gilt portrait of Louis Daguerre surrounded by floral scrollwork. On the inside, a superb sixth-plate daguerreotype shows a composed matron in bonnet and shawl, posed beside a stack of books with tasteful hand tint to her cuffs and ribbon. Daguerre on the cover and a daguerreotype within is the kind of visual pun nineteenth-century photographers would have appreciated.
Meade Brothers of New York marketed these embellished covers as a tribute to the inventor, and examples paired with such a dignified studio likeness are not often seen. The sitter’s steady gaze and comfortable authority suggest a woman who knew the value of a good book and perhaps a better opinion. Daguerre would approve of both the lighting and the attitude. The spine is just holding on.
