A young man seated in three-quarter view anchors this sixth plate daguerreotype, produced by Washington Lafayette Germon, one of Philadelphia's most prominent mid-century daguerreotypists. Germon trained under J. E. McClees beginning in 1847 and operated studios at successive Chestnut Street addresses through 1860, making this portrait dateable to that active window. The mat is gilt with a rope-and-leaf border framing an arched aperture, and the interior is lined in salmon-colored velvet.

The subject wears a dark frock coat with small button closures running the full length of the front placket, a wide dark cravat loosely knotted over a broad white collar, and holds a folded white handkerchief tucked into his breast. His dark hair is parted at center and swept to either side, and he meets the lens with a composed, direct expression, his right hand resting relaxed at his knee.

Germon was a bank note engraver by training before entering the daguerreian profession, a background that likely informed his refined aesthetic sensibility. He operated under his own name and in partnerships including McClees and Germon and, briefly, Fredericks, Penabert and Germon, maintaining a distinguished studio practice with real estate and personal property valued well above the professional norm by the 1860 census.

The imprint "GERMON, CHEST..." is embossed into the gilt mat at the lower left corner, referencing his Chestnut Street address. The leather case exterior features a deeply embossed acanthus scroll design surrounding a central cartouche.
