A compelling sixth plate daguerreotype depicting two boys seated side by side, likely brothers, posed before a simple backdrop. Each wears a dark, collared jacket with patterned waistcoat and bow tie, and their coordinated attire and similar expressions convey a familial closeness. The boy on the right sits with arms crossed in an assertive posture, while the one on the left rests his hands on his lap with a slightly more relaxed demeanor. The image was taken by the noted Portland, Maine daguerreotypist, identified by the deep red velvet pad embossed with a patriotic eagle above the name "Charlton" in the arch and “Portland” below, a known mark of daguerreian John M. Charlton.

Charlton worked in Portland in the early 1850s and is known for producing finely executed portraits with excellent tonal clarity, as evidenced here. The daguerreotype is housed in a full leather case with geometric floral motifs, decorated with the raised image of a stag's head surrounded by a foliate wreath, an uncommon design with strong visual appeal. A highly detailed and emotionally resonant early Maine portrait by a recognized maker.
