He sits turned slightly to one side with his gaze meeting the camera, his hair parted and combed across the brow. The dark single-breasted tunic has a standing collar, a front row of bright domed buttons, fringeless epaulettes, and a cuff flap closed with three buttons. The hand in his lap wears a heavy ring, and his other arm rests on a table draped with a floral printed cloth. A chair back shows behind him.

The plate is set in a gilt mat with a pebbled surface and a rope-pattern border. The case is black grained leather with ruled line borders, a wine velvet lining, and a push-button clasp.
