An elderly woman seated before a dark studio backdrop anchors this sixth plate daguerreotype, produced by the Wilmington, Delaware firm of Carlisle and Scott, active at 95 Market Street from 1854 until approximately 1857. The portrait conveys both technical competence and compositional assurance characteristic of an established mid-century gallery. The image retains strong tonal contrast and fine facial resolution.

The subject wears a dark silk dress with a large white fichu folded and tied at the bodice, and a white cap fitted close to her head with a ruffled brim framing deeply lined features and a direct, steady gaze. Her hands, covered with fine open-weave lace or net mitts, rest crossed in her lap. A draped prop or chair back is visible at her right side.

Nelson Carlisle began his daguerreian career in Wilmington in 1853, initially in partnership with Betts at Market and Third Streets, where the firm advertised stereoscopic daguerreotypes from life. After Betts departed in April 1854, Carlisle and Scott continued operations at 95 Market Street, making this portrait dateable to that narrow window of 1854 to 1857.

The photographer's imprint "Carlisle & Scott" is stamped into the lower edge of the gilt mat. The leather case features an embossed floral and scroll design on both exterior panels and retains its original red velvet interior pad.
