Two young men seated side by side anchor this sixth plate ambrotype, produced by Summer A. Smith, active at 416 North Second Street, Philadelphia, and documented in city directories between 1859 and 1860. The studio's imprint appears pressed into the rust-red velvet pad on the interior of the case lid, reading "S A SMITH" above "361 2d St," preserving a direct attribution to this briefly active Philadelphia daguerreotypist. The image is housed in a thermoplastic case with deeply molded figural scenes on both exterior panels depicting women in period dress within oval cartouches surrounded by floral and vine decoration.

Both subjects wear dark frock coats over white shirts with broad satin bow ties, and both sit with hands resting naturally in their laps. The man at left has close-cropped side-parted hair and a clean-shaven face with a direct, composed expression, while the man at right is taller, wears longer swept-back hair, and carries a full beard trimmed at the jaw.

Summer A. Smith, likely the same individual recorded as Somers A. Smith at 352 North Second Street in 1860, operated in a dense corridor of Philadelphia photographic studios during the height of the ambrotype period. His brief documented presence and the imprinted case make attributed examples from his studio genuinely scarce.

The velvet pad interior bears the embossed studio imprint "S A SMITH / 361 2d St" in period lettering.
