Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A quarter plate daguerreotype of a couple by Jean-Baptiste Sabatier-Blot, signed in ink on the mount with his Palais-Royal address. Sabatier-Blot, a miniature painter and the friend and pupil of Daguerre, made the celebrated 1844 portrait of the inventor, and the patterned table cloth seen here is the same one that appears in that portrait.

The woman sits at left with her hair parted at the center and falling in long ringlets, wearing a lace collar closed with a small brooch, a long chain, and a lace cuff at the wrist. Her glance is turned to one side. The man beside her has a moustache and chin tuft, a high collar and dark bow cravat, and rests his forearm on the cloth-covered table with his hand hanging over its edge.

Sabatier-Blot worked from 137 Palais-Royal between 1844 and 1848 and was later a founding member of the Société française de photographie. The plate is in a paper passe-partout under glass, with a ruled line around the rounded opening.

Signed in ink at the lower right of the mount: "Sabatier-Blot, palais-Royal, 137."
