A lawyer, journalist, and historian, he authored the long-running Mission Play (1912), a pageant depicting California's Spanish mission history that ran for over twenty years and was seen by millions of visitors. His newspaper column for the Los Angeles Times and his regional histories made him a beloved cultural ambassador for Southern California.
