Congressman, historian, and post John Steven McGroarty is portrayed in a real photo postcard seated outdoors in a wooden chair, holding an open document or manuscript in both hands as though reading, surrounded by foliage and dappled natural light. He wears a dark suit and appears in late middle age, his posture relaxed and his attention directed downward toward the page. A photographer's credit appears in small script at the lower right of the image, and McGroarty's own inscription "Faithfully Yours / John Steven McGroarty" is written in flowing script across the lower mount.

The outdoor setting and casual reading pose give the image the character of an informal literary portrait rather than a conventional studio likeness, presenting McGroarty in the act of engaging with text. The postcard reverse is undivided and bears no stamp box, consistent with early postcard production, and carries an extensive handwritten biographical notation in period ink.

John Steven McGroarty (1862–1944) was one of Southern California's most prominent public figures in the early twentieth century, serving as California's first official Poet Laureate beginning in 1933 and as a U.S. Congressman from 1935 to 1939. A lawyer, journalist, and historian, he authored the long-running Mission Play (1912), a pageant depicting California's Spanish mission history that ran for over twenty years and was seen by millions of visitors. His newspaper column for the Los Angeles Times and his regional histories made him a beloved cultural ambassador for Southern California.

The reverse bears a handwritten notation reading "Lawyer, Newspaperman / Poet Laureate, Playwright / Congressman, historian / and So. California Booster," with dealer code "6/04/06 / 1."
