A real photo postcard captures an unidentified male student seated at a wooden school desk, his back to the camera, head bowed and resting on his hand as he faces a large chalkboard filling the frame. No photographer's imprint is visible, and the card is undated, though real photo postcard stock and the interior details suggest an early twentieth century American school setting.

The chalkboard displays three chemistry examination questions written in cursive, asking students to write a reaction when HCl is added to Na2CO3, give tests for a sulphate and a carbonate reaction, and explain how to prepare ammonium hydroxide and identify commercial ammonia. A secondary panel to the right bears numerical notations including "At Test 100, Dec. 200, Spring 500" alongside percentages reading 3% and 35%. A framed portrait grouping of three figures hangs near the ceiling in the upper right corner, and patterned wallpaper is visible above the chalkboard line.

The composition is deliberately candid, shot from behind and low, emphasizing the scale of the blackboard text relative to the solitary student, creating an unusually documentary record of early science education in an American classroom.
