No photographer's imprint appears on the reverse.

The interior setting features floral wallpaper, lace curtains, a large potted fern, and a framed portrait on the wall behind the group. Roughly a dozen children ranging from toddler to early adolescent age are distributed throughout the frame, the girls wearing light-colored blouses and hair bows, the boys in dark jackets and collared shirts. A teenage boy stands at the rear center, hands at his sides, wearing a suit with a knotted tie.

The McDonough County Orphanage operated in Macomb, Illinois, serving orphaned and indigent children in western Illinois during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Images documenting institutional child welfare from this period are uncommon and carry significant local historical value.
