A real photo postcard captures an unidentified Japanese puppeteer operating a female bunraku puppet in what appears to be an interior theatrical or domestic setting. The image was printed on Brilinta photo paper stock, placing production likely in the mid-twentieth century. No photographer's imprint is visible on the reverse.

The puppeteer, a shaved-headed man wearing a patterned kimono with wide layered sleeves, gazes downward at the puppet with focused concentration. The puppet is dressed as a female character in a pale floral kimono with an elaborately styled dark wig adorned with ornamental hair pins. To the right of the figures stands a cylindrical paper lantern on a raised lacquered stand, casting soft ambient light within the scene. Shoji screens and a wooden interior architectural frame are visible in the background.

Bunraku, the classical Japanese puppet theater tradition recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, employs large, elaborately costumed puppets manipulated by visible operators. The costume and puppet styling visible here are consistent with established bunraku conventions, particularly the onnagata female puppet type.

The reverse bears handwritten inscriptions in blue ink including the words "traditional" and partially legible cursive text, Japanese characters printed on the card stock, and a penciled notation reading "COLEZ 4/01/63." The number 3 appears in the upper left corner.
