Unusual and striking CDV photograph of Chang Woo Gow, the famed Chinese giant, posed alongside a dwarf companion, both holding fans and dressed in elaborate embroidered robes. Chang stands with his hand resting atop the dwarf’s head, emphasizing the dramatic height difference. The pair toured Europe and America as a popular attraction in the 19th century, and this portrait was produced by the Stereoscopic Company of London, photographers to the Prince of Wales, with their backmark at 110 & 108 Regent Street and 54 & 53 Cheapside. Reverse bears bold typography and red ink chop stamp, with a period inscription reading “1/2 Chang.” A clean, sharply printed studio image, with excellent contrast and detail. A fantastic example of Victorian-era ethnographic photography and sideshow ephemera.
