Cabinet card portrait of a uniformed railroad worker posed full-length in studio, holding a metal lantern at his side. The mount is printed for Wm. Delius, Waterbury, Connecticut, with the subject wearing a double-breasted work coat and cap consistent with late nineteenth-century rail or yard service. The lantern, prominently displayed, serves as a clear occupational attribute and anchors the image within railroad labor culture of the period.

The reverse bears a contemporary inscription reading “Harrison, N. Dowd, April 18th 1887,” likely identifying the sitter and date. Occupational portraits of railroad employees are notably less common than military or civilian studio views, particularly those incorporating tools of the trade in such a deliberate manner.

A strong and visually direct example of late 19th-century occupational photography, combining clear identification, date, and a well-composed studio setting with painted backdrop. The lantern and uniformed presentation give the image both documentary and aesthetic appeal within railroad and labor-related photographic collecting categories.
