The fence structure beside him is constructed of rough-hewn horizontal rails set into a vertical post, consistent with a working rural property.

The outdoor compositional setting and heavy working coat, identification of the subject as a hunter, align with a portrait intended to convey occupation and character rather than formal social standing. The tintype is housed in a gilt-bordered thermoplastic case with an embossed floral and scrollwork exterior on the front panel and a cloth-covered contemporary replacement lid.
