Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

Three unidentified men occupy a quarter plate daguerreotype of exceptional compositional confidence, seated in close proximity against a plain graduated backdrop that places full attention on the sitters. The image dates to the early-to-mid 1850s based on dress, case style, and the thermoplastic construction of the housing, and no photographer's imprint is visible. The plate is presented within a gilt rope-pattern oval mat framed by a broad decorative surround, the ensemble seated into a full thermoplastic case with an embossed floral and scrollwork design on both covers and a crimson velvet interior pad bearing an embossed leaf motif.

The man at left holds a dark beaver hat against his chest and wears a frock coat with a wide lapel and bow cravat, his trimmed beard and direct gaze anchoring the composition. The central figure, the heaviest of the three, sits with his arm resting across the right-hand man's shoulder, wearing a double-breasted coat and loosely knotted bow tie. The man at right is turned in three-quarter profile toward his companions and wears a tall silk top hat, a dark frock coat, and a bearded chin visible in profile.

The pose is unusually casual for the daguerreian era, with the central sitter's arm draped over his neighbor's shoulder creating a relaxed informality that suggests close familiarity among the three men, whether colleagues, brothers, or friends.

The case spine bears a small paper label with a dealer or inventory notation.
