Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

Two unidentified men sit together in this quarter plate daguerreotype, a format well suited to the close, composed arrangement the operator achieved. The image dates to the late 1840s or early 1850s based on clothing style and case construction, and no photographer's imprint is visible. The gilt mat frames the subjects tightly from roughly the knee upward, and the leather case features an embossed floral and scrollwork design on the exterior cover.

The man at left wears a heavily patterned brocade waistcoat over a dark coat, with a wide black cravat and white shirt collar, and holds a slim walking stick upright in his right hand. The man at right is dressed in a plain dark coat with a loosely knotted white silk cravat, and rests his right arm raised with his hand touching the side of his head in a relaxed pose. Both men face the camera directly with composed, steady expressions.

The juxtaposition of the two figures, one more formally dressed and one in a looser, more casual arrangement, gives the portrait an unusual energy for a paired daguerreotype of this period. The gilt mat is a shaped cartouche form with an ornate pressed border.
