We are pleased to announce our next auction, featuring approximately 200 individual lots drawn from a diverse and compelling range of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. This sale focuses on vernacular images, photographs created not as formal studio portraits or elite commissions, but as direct, unscripted records of lived experience. These are objects made by and for everyday people, preserving moments of intimacy, labor, travel, performance, identity, and loss.

Horse and sleigh winter scenes are rare in daguerreian photography, with outdoor images being technically demanding and compositionally difficult. This quarter plate daguerreotype captures a striking image of a harnessed dark horse with a white blaze on its face, standing poised before a small cutter-style sleigh resting on snow-covered ground. A bundled female figure is seated in the sleigh, her features partially obscured by low winter light and fur covering. Behind them, the vertical siding of a barn or large outbuilding serves as a neutral backdrop, enhancing the stark contrast between the horse, sleigh, and snow.

The daguerreotype is framed in a nonpareil mat, housed in a full leather case embossed with a classical motif featuring a central flaming torch flanked by agricultural tools, framed by an ornate wreath. Sleighing imagery of this kind is especially scarce in the daguerreian era, offering a rare glimpse into period transportation and seasonal portraiture outside the confines of a traditional studio.
