We are pleased to announce our next auction, featuring approximately 200 individual lots drawn from a diverse and compelling range of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. This sale focuses on vernacular images, photographs created not as formal studio portraits or elite commissions, but as direct, unscripted records of lived experience. These are objects made by and for everyday people, preserving moments of intimacy, labor, travel, performance, identity, and loss.

Elegant quarter plate daguerreotype of a seated woman captured in three-quarter pose, identified by the etched signature “Churchill” on the lower left of the plate referencing Thomas P. Churchill, the noted mid-19th-century daguerreotypist active in upstate New York. The sitter is dressed in a voluminous dark silk dress with fitted sleeves and white cuffs, her hands resting gently in her lap. She wears a white ruched cap with lace frill and a tied neck bow, typical of conservative domestic fashion of the 1850s.

Her steady gaze and composed expression convey an air of quiet dignity. The image is richly detailed, with delicate textures visible in the dress, cap, and side-draped paisley tablecloth. Photographs by Churchill are relatively scarce, and this sensitively rendered portrait showcases his mastery of lighting and studio composition, making it an exceptional example of signed, regionally significant daguerreian portraiture.
