The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography’s formative century.

Quarter-length portrait of a well-dressed young man posed standing beside a covered table, wearing a wide diagonal sash worn from shoulder to hip. The sash is clearly intentional and symbolic rather than decorative, strongly indicating political affiliation or participation in a campaign, civic procession, or party organization. Such sashes were commonly associated with Whig and early Democratic campaign culture of the late 1840s and early 1850s, particularly during presidential election cycles and organized rallies.

The sitter’s formal attire, confident stance, and deliberate display of the sash suggest a portrait made to commemorate public identity rather than private family record. Political daguerreotypes of this type are scarce, as most campaign material from the period was ephemeral and rarely incorporated into formal studio portraiture.

Housed in a period full leather case with embossed floral basket motif, gilt brass mat, and red velvet pad. Image retains strong contrast and clarity with light age-consistent surface wear. Case shows expected handling wear but remains structurally sound.

An uncommon and historically resonant example of early American political self-representation in the daguerreian era.
