Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A bearded sea captain occupies the full composition of this quarter-plate English ambrotype, seated in a carved crimson armchair with his right hand raised to support his chin in a pensive pose. The ambrotype process, fixing a glass-plate negative against a dark backing to produce a positive image, was at the height of its British popularity in the 1850s and 1860s, and the deliberate inclusion of a painted maritime backdrop identifies this portrait as a purposeful commission reflecting the sitter's profession.

The man wears a dark frock coat over a buttoned waistcoat with a white shirt and loosely knotted cravat, a gold watch chain looping across his midsection. His thick side-parted hair curls at the temples above a full beard, and his direct, heavy-lidded gaze is composed and authoritative. Visible through a painted window behind him, a fully rigged square-sailed ship rides calm blue water beneath a bright sky, a red ensign-style flag painted at the mast.

The painted ship backdrop, integrated into the studio composition rather than printed or pasted, was a deliberate statement of the sitter's seafaring identity, a convention found primarily in British portrait studios serving maritime communities during the mid-Victorian period. Such backdrops were commissioned accessories indicating a client of means and professional standing.

The image is housed in a quarter-plate thermoplastic case, the exterior molded in high relief with a floral and foliate pattern incorporating wisteria-like grape clusters and a central cartouche motif, repeated identically on both the front and back covers. The interior retains its original burgundy cut-velvet pad embossed with an ornate floral medallion, and the gilt brass oval mat frames the image in a beaded surround.
