Powerfully composed quarter plate ambrotype portrait of a man standing beside a decorated table and holding a glass kerosene lantern, likely indicative of his work in the railroad or transportation trade. Dressed in a vested suit with a visible watch fob, he appears posed with quiet authority, his left hand resting on the back of a carved chair while his right arm extends to grip the handle of the lamp. The lamp itself is a standout element, clearly detailed with a wire handle and tiered base, and is prominently hand-tinted in gold.

The colorful patterned cloth draped over the table, combined with subtle tinting to the sitter’s cheeks and the lamp, adds rich dimension to the image. Housed in a full leather case with deep burgundy velvet pad and ornate floral basket design on the exterior, the presentation reinforces the significance of the subject’s profession. Railroad workers who handled lanterns were often signalmen or brakemen, responsible for critical safety communication at a time when such tools were essential for nighttime operations. A rare occupational image preserved in a visually arresting format.
