Mark Twain is the subject of all eleven pieces in this collection, which spans real photo postcards, printed postcards, a cyanotype, a sepia-toned print, and a color photomechanical card representing multiple publishers and photographers across roughly two decades of his public life. Publishers represented include the Rotograph Co. of New York, Sheahan's Famous People of Boston, and Becky Thatcher Book Shop of Hannibal, Missouri, with one view credited to photographer H. Tomlinson and another bearing a Marceau studio copyright. The range of formats and sources makes this an unusually varied single-subject accumulation.

Twain appears in white linen suit standing before his Hannibal boyhood home in an 1902 Tomlinson photograph, seated in a rocking chair on a wooden porch in two separate views, rendered in close-up bust portraits showing his signature wild white hair and walrus mustache, and pictured in top hat and dark frock coat in profile on a Rotograph card dated November 4, 1905. The cyanotype shows him seated in an armchair in his white suit, and one sepia print carries a handwritten inscription reading "With hearty greetings to you all from loving uncle Charles."

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who wrote as Mark Twain, was born in Florida, Missouri in 1835 and spent his formative years in Hannibal, the river town that inspired the settings of his most celebrated novels. One Rotograph card in the group bears a handwritten message referencing Twain's house called Stormfield, which he built in Redding, Connecticut in 1908, placing that card among his final years.

The reverse of the top-hat Rotograph card reads "Rotograph Series No. A 488" and carries a written address to "Mrs. Thomas O'Brien." One Rotograph card addressed to Miss Jennie D. Lyon of Yakesville, Connecticut carries a one-cent stamp. A Christmas greeting card reads "Rotograph Series No. 13, Merry Christmas to Miss Stewart from Sam T." The Tomlinson boyhood home view is captioned "Mark Twain and His Boyhood Home, Hannibal, Mo., 1902."
