“Stuck in the Mud” depicts a grounded sailing vessel resting on the exposed flats of a tidal harbour, photographed by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, the English photographer whose images of the North Yorkshire fishing town of Whitby made him one of the leading figures of late Victorian pictorial photography. The print is captioned in the negative “Stuck in the Mud 59 F.M.S.,” Sutcliffe’s own plate number and initials, and again in pencil on the reverse.

The ship rests heeled against a rocky outcrop at the base of the cliffs, her two masts and rigging silhouetted against a heavily clouded sky, a small cart or capstan visible on the exposed sand beside her hull. The tide has receded well beyond the vessel, leaving a wide expanse of wet mud and scattered rock reaching toward the horizon, with a second, more distant vessel faintly visible further out on the flats.

Sutcliffe settled in Whitby in the 1870s and spent the rest of his career photographing its harbour, fishing boats, and working people, building a body of work credited with elevating ordinary coastal life to the status of fine art and earning him recognition within the pictorialist movement of the 1880s and 1890s. Low-tide scenes of stranded or moored vessels were a recurring subject for him, using the atmospheric conditions of the Yorkshire coast, mist, cloud, and exposed sand, to lend his harbour photographs a painterly, often melancholic quality.

The negative is captioned “Stuck in the Mud 59 F.M.S.,” and the reverse is inscribed in pencil, “Stuck in the mud.”
