The views include surface scenes showing rail cars transporting coal along curved tracks through mining districts as well as coal breakers and industrial structures used to process and prepare coal for shipment. Several stereographs depict underground mining scenes where workers extract coal from narrow seams and load it into carts for transport. Additional images show interior tunnels supported by heavy timber posts as miners work by artificial light deep within the mines. Published by the Keystone View Company and related stereographic publishers, these photographs formed part of widely distributed educational sets documenting American industry. The images provide a visual record of the equipment, labor, and environments associated with anthracite coal production during the height of the industry.
