Carte de visite featuring a bearded man presented within an elaborate printed and illustrated oval surround, clearly designed as an occupational and promotional image. The central photographic portrait is an albumen print, likely dating to the mid to late 1860s, set into a graphic composition incorporating pen-and-ink motifs and vignettes that emphasize the subject’s profession. No photographer’s imprint is visible on the recto or verso.

The surrounding illustrations include multiple symbolic references to penmanship and artistic skill. Readable inscriptions within the design include “The pen is mightier than the sword” beneath the portrait, a scroll reading “All Kinds of Plain & Fancy Penmanship Executed by R. T. Rawson,” and another stating “Executed with Pen and Ink about 1867.” Additional circular vignettes depict a hand holding a pen, a hand in the act of writing, and a small landscape scene, reinforcing the theme of craftsmanship and versatility in written expression. The overall presentation reflects the mid-19th-century practice of combining photography with engraved or lithographed advertising elements to promote skilled trades.

The verso is unmarked by any studio backstamp and instead bears a small affixed drawing of a sailboat, rendered in pen and ink, consistent with the calligraphic and illustrative theme of the card. The mount shows light overall toning, with slightly darker toning along the right edge. This CDV stands as a strong example of occupational photography and personal advertising from the post–Civil War period, documenting both the visual culture of penmanship and the ways artisans used photography to market their skills.
