We are pleased to announce our next auction, featuring approximately 200 individual lots drawn from a diverse and compelling range of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. This sale focuses on vernacular images, photographs created not as formal studio portraits or elite commissions, but as direct, unscripted records of lived experience. These are objects made by and for everyday people, preserving moments of intimacy, labor, travel, performance, identity, and loss.

Charming and crisply rendered ninth plate daguerreotype of a young child in a patterned gingham dress, seated in an upholstered chair. The child’s slightly tousled curls and direct gaze are captured with striking clarity, emblematic of the best work of New York daguerreotypists during the 1850s. The plate is stamped in all four corners with the name “S. MILLER ARTIST,” identifying the photographer as Sidney Miller, who was recorded as a partner in the Edward Anthony firm, located at 308 Broadway, New York City, during 1855–1856. His brief but notable partnership ended in November 1856.

The image is housed in a well-worn but intact leather case with a boldly embossed geometric design. An appealing and scarce signed example by a short-lived but historically documented New York daguerreotypist.
