Excellent group of nine original CDV portraits of Union generals from the Civil War era, each with either Anthony or Brady back marks—several labeled from “Brady’s National Portrait Gallery,” and all bearing studio imprints from the renowned E. & H.T. Anthony or Mathew Brady. These studio markings ensure these photographs originated from the most important photographic archives of the Civil War.
Included are identified images of prominent figures such as General George B. McClellan, General Winfield Scott, General John G. Foster, General Quincy A. Gillmore, General Benjamin F. Butler, General John E. Wool, General A.E. Burnside, and General Joseph Hooker. The ninth image is of General Samuel P. Heintzelman. A number of the cartes have period pencil identifications or collector annotations on verso.
Each image captures the bearing and demeanor of high command during the war, with several officers shown with drawn swords, full dress uniforms, and seated studio poses. Notably, McClellan's CDV is clearly labeled on the mount, and Butler's and Scott’s portraits exhibit exceptional clarity and contrast.
A rich and display-worthy grouping for any collector of Civil War photography, especially desirable with consistent Anthony and Brady attributions throughout—a solid nucleus for a general's CDV collection.
