Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

This rare multi-pose albumen print depicts Hayreddin Pasha, known in French as Khérédine, the Circassian-born Tunisian statesman and military general photographed in 1861. The sheet presents eight individual exposures arranged in two rows of four, capturing the subject in a variety of seated and standing poses within the same ornate studio interior, produced in the manner of a photographic proof sheet intended for selection. No photographer's imprint is visible on the image.

The subject wears full military dress uniform adorned with an elaborately embroidered chest piece, epaulettes, a sash with a prominent star decoration, and a dark fez. Studio props include a carved and gilded writing desk, a bronze sculptural bust, decorative drapery, and patterned carpeting, with open-backed chairs placed in the background of the standing compositions. The subject's expression is composed and authoritative across all poses.

Hayreddin Pasha served as Prime Minister of the Beylik of Tunis and later rose to the post of Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, serving from December 1878 to July 1879. The reformist constitution promulgated in 1861 established new governmental institutions, including the Grand Council, and Hayreddin was the first appointed to serve as its president. The 1861 date inscribed on the mount places this portrait at precisely the moment of his greatest institutional prominence in Tunisia.

The photograph is mounted on a pale blue card with an octagonal window mat. A handwritten label below the image reads: "20f88 - Général Khérédine 1861" (20f88 - General Khérédine 1861). A handwritten number "30507" (appearing inverted as "L8S0L") is visible at the center of the print sheet.
