A seated black woman identified on the reverse as Jane Carter is portrayed in this gelatin silver mounted photo measuring 8" by 6" produced by Jackson & Co. at 222 Court Street, Brooklyn, New York, circa 1885 to 1895. The studio imprint appears in script on the lower right of the front mount, and a penciled inscription on the plain reverse records both a recipient address and the sitter's name, indicating the portrait was presented as a gift.
The subject sits facing the camera in a three-quarter-length pose, wearing a white high-collared blouse with decorative button placket and lace or embroidered cuffs; a small brooch is visible at the collar and her hands rest in her lap. Her hair is worn up and she meets the lens with a direct, composed expression against a vignette ground.
The reverse inscription reads "190 Union St., Brooklyn, N.Y. / from Jane Carter," placing both the giver and recipient within the same Brooklyn community and confirming the portrait's function as a personal keepsake exchanged between individuals known to one another.
