Carte de visite portrait of a young midget violinist identified on the reverse in period pencil as “Rose Wolff, Age 17 Months.” The child is posed standing in a studio interior holding a small violin and bow, dressed in an elaborate ruffled dress typical of late nineteenth-century studio costume portraiture. Decorative studio props surround the subject, including a table with stacked books and a second violin resting nearby.

The mount bears the imprint “Eisenmann, Photo, 229 Bowery, N.Y.” while the reverse carries the distinctive illustrated advertising design for Charles Eisenmann’s studio, reading “The Eisenmann — Instantaneous Photographs — The Popular Photographer — 229 Bowery, N.Y.” Eisenmann (1836–1897) operated one of New York’s most prolific portrait studios and is best known for photographing theatrical performers, circus personalities, and unusual or novelty subjects.

Portraits of midget prodigies were a popular novelty subject in nineteenth-century photography, often produced for publicity. This example combines Eisenmann’s theatrical style with a charming depiction of an infant violinist posed with full musical props.
