Albumen cabinet card portrait depicting five members of the Murray family posed in an ornate studio interior. Seated at center is an older woman holding a small booklet, flanked by the three Midget Murray Triplets (actually brothers) dressed in matching dark suits with waistcoats and high collars. Behind them stand an adult man and woman. The three boys appear uniform in size and dress, suggesting the “Murray Triplets” noted in pencil on the reverse.
The “Murray Triplets,” John, James, and Joseph, toured with P.T. Barnum's American Museum in the late nineteenth century.
Front mount signed “Eisenmann, New York.” Reverse bears the blue trade imprint for Thos. Eisenmann, “The Popular Photographer,” 229 Bowery, N.Y., with branch gallery at 18 West 14th Street. Period pencil inscription on verso reads “Murray Triplets” with additional later notations dated 6/23/03.
A documented Eisenmann cabinet card featuring three little people (historically also referred to as dwarfs in 19th century usage), likely connected to exhibition or performance history. Strong New York sideshow and curiosity photography association.
