Albumen carte de visite portrait of Major General William T. Sherman, shown in bust view wearing his Union officer’s uniform with shoulder straps and double-breasted coat. The printed caption beneath the image reads “MAJ. GEN. W. T. SHERMAN.” The portrait presents Sherman in a straightforward studio composition with textured background typical of widely distributed Civil War era CDV portraits of famous military figures.

Sherman served as one of the Union Army’s most influential commanders and later became Commanding General of the United States Army after the war.

The reverse is blank with no photographer’s imprint visible. The format and printed caption indicate it was likely issued as a commercially distributed Civil War era portrait card for collectors and the public.
