Albumen carte de visite portrait depicting Madame Sherwood, identified in the printed caption as a “Giant Lady.” The image shows Sherwood seated in a studio portrait wearing an elaborate dark dress with multiple tiers of ruffled fabric forming a wide bell-shaped skirt typical of mid-19th century theatrical or exhibition costume. She wears a decorative headpiece and jewelry, posed formally with one arm resting at her waist while seated beside a small studio table. The printed caption beneath the image provides measurements describing her as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 7 feet around the waist, and 24 inches around the arm, noting she was 31 years old and weighed 675 pounds.

The reverse bears the photographer’s imprint “Charles D. Fredricks & Co., ‘Specialité,’ 587 Broadway, New York.” Fredricks operated one of the most prominent portrait studios in New York during the mid-19th century and produced numerous celebrity and curiosity portraits for commercial distribution.

Photographs of sideshow and exhibition performers were widely sold as collectible cartes de visite during the Civil War era and afterward. This example represents the popular Victorian fascination with unusual human curiosities and traveling exhibitions that were frequently promoted through photographic portraits.
