Striking Victorian cabinet card portrait depicting famous heavyset "fat woman" identified as "Madame Wells" and “Mrs. Wells.” "Madam Wells, She poses " beside a small studio table with stacked books. She wears a dark dress trimmed with ruffled fabric over a lighter lace bodice and sleeves, along with a necklace and drop earrings. Her hair is arranged in a smooth bun adorned with a decorative floral headpiece, a fashionable embellishment in later nineteenth-century studio portraiture. She olds a purse with a portrait of her peeking out from a pocket.

The sitter holds a small handbag or purse with a metal frame, from which a tiny photographic portrait card is tucked into the front pocket. This intriguing detail may represent a portrait of a relative or loved one, a sentimental inclusion occasionally incorporated into studio images of the period.

The mount is a distinctive pink-tinted cabinet card stock, a style sometimes used in the 1880s–1890s for fashionable portrait presentations. No photographer’s imprint is visible on the mount or reverse. The plain back suggests the image may have been trimmed from an album or produced by a studio using minimal mount printing.

Overall the photograph reflects the conventions of late nineteenth-century studio portraiture, combining formal posing with small personal props that convey status and sentiment.
