Poetic and powerfully expressive carbon print by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879), titled Story of the Heavens, circa 1865. The print measures approximately 5 ½ x 7 ½ inches and is presented in a period mat and frame with overall dimensions of 13 x 16 inches.

Blending spiritual symbolism with romantic theatricality, Cameron captures two young girls under a dramatic parasol in a moment that feels both staged and otherworldly. Typical of Cameron’s mature work, the photograph uses soft focus and careful composition to evoke a sense of timeless allegory. The subjects—thought to be local children or relatives—are posed with classical drapery, recalling Renaissance painting and mythological storytelling.

Handwritten in red ink beneath the print is the inscription: "Story of the Heavens" c.1865 / photographed by Julia Margaret Cameron, adding provenance and narrative context. The image holds deep, rich tonal quality with a slightly matte surface characteristic of early carbon prints.

Cameron’s photographs—especially those with allegorical or literary themes—are increasingly rare in period presentation. Story of the Heavens is a compelling and beautiful example of her singular vision: merging photography with poetry, portraiture with narrative. An exceptional artifact from one of the most important women in the history of photography.
