Raw, rare, and unforgettable—this is 19th- and early 20th-century photography at its best. Vernacular portraits, Native American warriors, African American resilience, Mormon pioneers, Western frontier families, and stark post-mortem scenes. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, and cabinet cards that capture real life without filters. Every image tells a story of survival, pride, and change. A museum-worthy collection for those who know real American history when they see it.

Original carte de visite portrait of Union soldier William Le France, clearly signed on the mount in period ink. The seated sergeant poses in regulation frock coat and trousers, with triple-chevron NCO rank insignia on each sleeve. Photographed by Stein’s Photographic Gallery of Ravenna, Ohio, with tax-stamp still affixed to the verso—canceled across the face and postmarked 1865. Period ink notation also appears on back: “Randolph / Portage Co / O[hio],” providing a strong match to Le France’s local residence.

A crisp and well-preserved studio portrait showing nice detail in uniform and insignia. Minor wear to corners and a small paper lift in the upper left, but the image itself remains clean and striking. A rare identified image with location, rank, and surname all confirmed in period hand—very likely traceable to further regimental or service records with minimal effort.

An excellent CDV for Civil War collectors focused on Ohio troops or NCOs.
