Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

An unidentified man dominates this commanding half plate daguerreotype, seated in three-quarter pose with his gaze directed slightly upward and to the left, conveying a striking intensity. The image dates to the early-to-mid 1850s, consistent with the half plate format, the style of the thermoplastic case, and the sitter's dress. No photographer's imprint is visible.

The subject wears a dark frock coat over a matching waistcoat, with a white shirt and large black bow tie knotted loosely at the collar. His dark hair is swept back from a center part, and a close-cropped beard frames his jaw. His expression is direct and unsentimental, with deep-set eyes and strongly defined brow.

The thermoplastic case features an elaborate molded Rococo design on both exterior panels, centered on an oval cartouche surrounded by scrollwork, foliate corners, and beaded borders. The interior preserves a deep crimson velvet pad embossed with a symmetrical flourish pattern opposite the image, and the gilt brass mat frames the plate within a braided oval opening.

No photographer's imprint is present on the mat or case interior. The plate is housed in a half plate thermoplastic case.
