An elderly man of commanding presence anchors this half plate daguerreotype, produced by the Philadelphia partnership of McClees and Germon during their documented tenure at the southeast corner of Eighth and Chestnut Streets, active from 1848 to 1855. James Earle McClees, born in Chester County in 1821, began his photographic career in 1844 under M.P. Simons before forming this notable partnership with Washington L. Germon in 1847. The studio was among the most respected daguerreian establishments in antebellum Philadelphia.

The subject is shown in three-quarter bust, his thick white hair swept back and falling loosely at the sides, his deeply lined face turned slightly upward with a composed, direct expression. He wears a dark frock coat over a buttoned waistcoat, a white cravat knotted at the collar, and a ruffled white pocket cloth visible at his chest. The oval gilt mat features a finely detailed rope-and-feather border pressed into the surround.

The leather case is embossed with an elaborate foliate and scrollwork design centered on a cartouche framing a botanical spray, with acanthus corners and a crosshatch-patterned back panel. The interior retains its original deep crimson velvet pad opposite the image. The maker's imprint "S. Broadsent" is stamped into the lower corner of the gilt mat.
