Albumen stereoview portrait of Mark Twain photographed by J. Gurney & Son, New York. The close studio portrait shows Twain with his characteristic mustache and wavy hair, dressed in formal attire with bow tie and waistcoat. The mount is printed “Photographed and Published by J. Gurney & Son, 5th Ave. cor. 16th St. New York.” The photograph likely dates to the 1870s based on mount style and dress. Celebrity portrait stereoviews such as this were produced for the stereoscope market and issued by leading photographic studios including Gurney & Son. Twain was a frequent photographic subject during the period, and stereoview portraits were distributed commercially for collectors and admirers. Plain mount with printed Gurney & Son imprint along the left edge. The verso bears a later collection stamp reading “Howard & Thelma Bendix, Montclair, N.J., Stereoscopic View Collection” with a handwritten view number.
