Albumen cabinet photograph by L. Suzuki, working in Kudanzaka, Tokyo, and Masagocho, Yokohama, showing a seated group of five young women in late-Victorian dress. Their names are inscribed along the lower mount: A. B. Atkinson, M. A. Spencer, M. A. Vance, R. J. Watson, and “A. M. K.” The composition is formal, posed before an ornate mantelpiece and framed painting.
Suzuki was among the noted foreign-client photographers active in Japan during the Meiji period, producing both studio portraits and souvenir photographs for travelers, educators, and diplomatic communities. Cabinet portraits of Western sitters taken in Japanese studios are considerably less common than Japanese-subject images produced for export.
The print is mounted on the photographer’s dark blue and gilt-printed card with his Tokyo and Yokohama studio addresses. Light handling wear to edges of mount; image with even tonal range and good clarity.
