Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A French quarter plate daguerreotype of four people in everyday working dress, three men in caps gathered around a woman in a white bonnet. Portraits of working people in their own clothes are far less common than sitters in formal dress, and this group is hand tinted.

At left a man with a moustache and chin beard wears a soft peaked cap, a neckerchief, and a light smock. The woman at center has a frilled white cap, a ruffled collar touched with blue, a patterned bodice, and hands crossed at her waist, with a hand resting on her shoulder. At right an elderly man with white hair and side whiskers wears a peaked cap and a light smock open over a dark buttoned waistcoat. Behind them stands a bearded man in a tall uniform cap with a badge and a dark buttoned coat.

The plate is mounted in the French manner behind glass painted in a tortoiseshell pattern, with a shaped gilt line and a gilt mat. The back is sealed with paper and fitted with a brass hanging ring.
