Group of four original CDV (carte de visite) composite photographs featuring multiple portraits of prominent Union generals from the Civil War. Each mount includes nine to sixteen vignettes or bust-length studio portraits, arranged in grid format and captioned with the subjects' names—many of which include some of the war’s most notable military leaders.
Identified generals across the four cards include George B. McClellan, Winfield Scott, Ambrose Burnside, Benjamin Butler, Don Carlos Buell, John Pope, Franz Sigel, William Rosecrans, Irvin McDowell, and many others. Several cards appear to be publisher-issued composites, likely intended for the commercial market during or immediately after the war, offering affordable access to popular military figures.
Each CDV measures approximately 2.5 x 4 inches and is mounted on standard cream card stock. Condition varies from about good to very good, with some light toning, edge wear, and handling marks typical of 1860s photographic paper. One image displays minor foxing in the background, but all portraits remain sharp and fully legible.
Composite CDVs of this kind are highly collectible as they encapsulate the wartime fascination with Union military leadership and represent a significant commercial trend in mid-19th century photography. A strong offering for Civil War collectors, photography historians, or those building out a comprehensive general officer archive.
