Two unidentified children are depicted in this quarter-plate daguerreotype produced by the Indianapolis firm of Rea and Bailey, placing the image between September 1853 and June 1854, the documented span of that partnership. The subjects are seated together against a plain dark ground, rendered with the sharp tonal clarity characteristic of the daguerreotype process. The image is housed in its original thermoplastic case with a red embossed cover and a gilt brass mat bearing the stamped imprint "REA & BAILEY" and "INDIANAPOLIS."

The older child, seated upright in a spindle-back chair, wears a dark dress with vertical pintuck pleating across the bodice and long fitted sleeves, hands folded in her lap. The younger child sits lower and slightly forward, resting one arm casually downward, wearing a matching dark garment with similar pintuck detailing and a wide scooped neckline. Both children wear their dark hair parted at the center and smoothed flat, and both hold direct, unsmiling expressions toward the camera.

Sampson Rea opened his Indianapolis gallery in October 1851 and entered partnership with Frank B. Bailey in September 1853, operating as the Metropolitan Gallery in the College Hall Buildings. The firm advertised one of the largest skylights in the region and was recognized at the 1853 Marion County Fair and Indiana State Fair for the quality of their daguerreotypes. Rea sold his interest to H.W. Mendenhall in June 1854, making this a precisely datable partnership imprint.
