Raw, rare, and unforgettable—this is 19th- and early 20th-century photography at its best. Vernacular portraits, Native American warriors, African American resilience, Mormon pioneers, Western frontier families, and stark post-mortem scenes. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, and cabinet cards that capture real life without filters. Every image tells a story of survival, pride, and change. A museum-worthy collection for those who know real American history when they see it.

Vibrant sixth plate daguerreotype of a young child posed astride an extraordinary hand-crafted folk art rocking horse. The child is crisply dressed in a double-breasted coat with broad white collar, one hand gripping the reins of the stylized horse with its large curved rockers and detailed painted decoration. The contrast between the child’s soft expression and the dynamic angular form of the rocker creates a powerful and unusually composed studio portrait.

The image is housed in a rare and ornate red leather case embossed in gilt with floral and scrollwork designs, a perfect match for the rich visual character of the daguerreotype itself. The case interior features plush red velvet and an elegant reticulated mat that enhances the framing of the child and toy. These early portraits with period toys—particularly large, sculptural folk art examples—are scarcely encountered and highly prized.

An exceptional and memorable image for collectors of early childhood photography, vernacular toys, or standout daguerreotype artistry.
