Albumen stereoview photograph depicting a signal station on board the U.S. Steamer Vermont, showing three uniformed signalmen posed on the ship’s deck amid rigging and deck equipment. At center stands the signal officer holding a spyglass, flanked by two signalmen holding signal flags prepared to send or receive messages. The maritime setting and naval rigging clearly situate the scene aboard a Union vessel. The orange stereoview mount is printed along the vertical margins, “PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY” and “WAR FOR THE UNION,” with the image numbered “No. 51” in the series.

The verso bears the printed title and description under the heading “WAR VIEWS,” dated 1861–1865. The text identifies the scene as a signal station aboard the U.S. Steamer Vermont and explains the use of flag signaling to communicate with land stations or other vessels on blockade duty. The card credits distribution to John C. Taylor of Hartford, Connecticut, and notes that the images were taken by a Government Artist during the years of the Civil War. The format and typography correspond to commercially issued Civil War stereoview series intended for home viewing through a stereoscope.

The mount retains its printed text and layout, with additional period pencil notations visible on the verso. No photographer’s name is printed on the card beyond the reference to a Government Artist, and no further manuscript identification appears beyond the series numbering and descriptive text.
