Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A collection of thirty-four albumen CDVs documenting Scottish landscapes, historic ruins, and rural life, produced primarily by George Washington Wilson and Company of Aberdeen, with additional contributions from J. Valentine of Dundee, Chas. Carruthers and Son of Langholm, J. Becket of Glasgow, and P.F. Patrick of Forfar. Wilson held a royal warrant from 1873, cementing his status as the leading photographer of Scotland, while Valentine received his Royal Warrant as Photographer to the Queen following a commission to produce Highland views. The subjects span the breadth of Victorian Scotland and represent the golden age of topographical CDV publishing.

Subjects across the group include Huntingtower Castle in Perthshire, Tantallon Castle looking east, Sweetheart Abbey from the south, Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, Dryburgh Abbey (including the Tomb of Sir Walter Scott and the St. Catherine Wheel Window), Jedburgh Abbey from the river and its Norman door in the cloisters, Abbotsford from the river, Queen Mary's House in Jedburgh, the Brig o' Balgownie in Aberdeen, Pease Bridge and Cove Harbour in Berwickshire, Neidpath Castle from the east, the Fountain in West End Park Glasgow, Glen Mills near Dumfries, Clouden Saw Mills near Dumfries, the Swiss Cottage in Bothwell Grounds, the Lake and garden views at Terregles House near Dumfries, Cauldron Linn (Falls of the Devon) in Perthshire, a Highland Washing scene, Highland cottages from Glen Sannox on Arran and near Lamlash on Arran, the Highland Cottage at Luss on Loch Lomond, Peebles from Neidpath Castle, a panoramic view of Langholm, and an engraved representation of King Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn. Wilson's catalogue had grown to over 400 views by 1863, sold across a wide variety of outlets, and by 1865 his company was printing over 500,000 photographs annually.

Like Wilson, Valentine embraced landscape photography, and by the 1860s his firm was producing topographical views to capitalize on the growing Scottish tourism industry. Together, these photographers defined the visual record of Victorian Scotland, and this group assembles an unusually broad survey of their published CDV output across castles, abbeys, rivers, cottages, bridges, waterfalls, and town panoramas.

Mounts carry printed imprints on the reverse including G.W. Wilson and Co., Aberdeen, with the notation "Photographers to Her Majesty in Scotland"; J. Valentine, Photographer to the Queen, Dundee; Chas. Carruthers and Son, Portrait and Landscape Photographers, Langholm; J. Becket, Photo, Queen's Park, Glasgow; and P.F. Patrick, Artist and Photographer, Forfar. Several Wilson views bear series numbers visible on the face. One reverse is inscribed in manuscript "Ancient Sun-dial, Glamis Castle, near Forfar." One mount carries a printed label reading "Cauldron Linn (Falls of the Devon), Perthshire" over a partially legible studio imprint.
