Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Sixty-four cartes de visite form a broad tour of Paris landmarks, churches, monuments, and gardens, assembled as a souvenir collection during the Second Empire and early Third Republic. Views include Notre Dame, the Panthéon, the Madeleine, the Arc de Triomphe, Hôtel des Invalides, the Conciergerie, and the Gare du Nord. Several cards carry the imprints of Parisian photographers and print dealers, including Jules Deplanque, Marinier, and Henri Guérard.

The Porte Saint-Denis and Porte Saint-Martin appear with horse-drawn carriages on surrounding streets, and La Bourse is shown with its columned facade and a kiosk in the foreground. Park views include the rocky island and suspension bridge at the Buttes-Chaumont and the Grande Cascade in the Bois de Boulogne. Fountains, including the Fontaine des Innocents and the Fontaine Louvois, appear alongside the equestrian statue of Henri IV.

Most mounts carry an ink caption in French naming the site beneath the image, and several versos are inscribed by hand, including "Louvre sur le quai" (the Louvre from the quay) and "Colonne de Juillet" (July Column). Imprints read "A la Colonnade du Louvre, Henri Guérard, 156 Rue de Rivoli"; "Jules Deplanque, 57 Faub. St Denis"; and "Photographie Pittoresque, Marinier, 35 rue du Faubourg St Martin."
