Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Victor Hugo, one of the towering figures of French literature, is depicted here in a carte-de-visite albumen print by H. Le Lieure, who identified himself on the reverse as "Photographe de S.M." (Photographer to His Majesty), operating from the Jardin Public in Geneva. The subject is identified by a printed caption reading "Victor Hugo" at the lower edge of the image, and the period of Hugo's presence in the region aligns with his long political exile from France, which lasted from 1851 until 1870. Following Napoleon III's coup d'état in 1851, Hugo denounced the emperor and was forced into exile, eventually settling in the Channel Islands, though his fame drew photographers and publishers throughout French-speaking Europe during those decades.

Hugo stands in a three-quarter pose, his left hand resting on an ornately carved wooden pedestal and his right tucked behind his coat at the hip. He wears a dark frock coat over a tweeed waistcoat and matching trousers, with a white shirt and black bow tie visible at the collar. His white hair is swept back, and he carries a full beard and mustache; behind him hangs a richly patterned drapery to the right of a plain tonal backdrop.

During his nearly twenty years of exile, Hugo produced the most extensive and original body of work of his career, including the essay *William Shakespeare* (1864), *Les Travailleurs de la mer* (1866), and *L'Homme qui rit* (1869), in addition to *Les Misérables* (1862), the novel that secured his global reputation. The three royal coat-of-arms devices printed on the reverse reinforce Le Lieure's claim to multiple royal warrants, a mark of commercial prestige common among leading provincial studios of the era.

The front of the mount bears the printed caption "Victor Hugo" beneath the image, along with the imprint "Le Lieure Phot. Éditeur." The reverse reads: "H. LE LIEURE / PHOTOGRAPHE DE S.M. / Jardin Public" ("H. Le Lieure / Photographer to His Majesty / Public Garden"), accompanied by three engraved heraldic shields surmounted by crowns. The mount features a pale blue border.
